The Little Mermaid
Students in The Arts Hub dance classes will be performing the dance theater production of The Little Mermaid on the weekend of May 17-19. Students are encouraged to participate in the production, however they may opt out if they choose. Participating in a full dance theater production allows dance students to learn valuable presentation, team and production coordination skills, as well as allows them to develop flexibility and the satisfaction of being an integral part of a unified production with audience appeal.
Efforts have been made to keep additional rehearsals to a minimum, however some additional rehearsals are required to participate in the dance theater show in order to ensure preparedness for the coordination aspects of the production.

About Our Classes
All of The HUB dance classes are high quality, encouraging students to stretch their abilities, yet respecting their individual rates of development. The HUB Dance Program offers the ability for all dancers to get solid, progressive dance skill development and to use those leveled skills in a standard Dance Theater production in December (Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen Dec 2018), as well as another uniquely created dance theater production adaptation in May (The Little Mermaid May 2019).
The Dance Theater model not only provides opportunities for students to present the dance skills they have acquired during the course of a semester, but dance students also learn many more performance skills while being a part of the creation of a cohesive story. i.e. production integration, stage presence, teamwork, theatrical timing, acting through dance, working with elaborate stage elements such as sets, specialty lighting, props, sound and character costumes.
Every class will perform their own approximately 3 minute piece of music that integrates with the Dance Theater story. They are also incorporated for at least a couple other group scenes in the show. Auditions for lead roles in The Snow Queen Dance Theater production will be held on September 29 from 12:30-1:30pm for all ages. The Mini-Performance (ages 4-7), Junior Performance (ages 8-11) and the Senior Performance (ages 11+) Companies will have additional highlighted dances in the Dance Theater performances. See below for audition information and requirements for these groups.
Fees for the dance concert and costumes are $25 for each class taken, which is a much lower cost than at other studios due to being charged only a “costume rental” fee for HUB costumes instead of being required to purchase costumes. Final performance ticket costs will apply.
Individual classes meet once a week. Each leveled class is designed to be taken for at least a full year before moving on. Instructors vary teaching methods and choreography in order to keep classes fresh and interesting while reinforcing skills. Students may take a single class or as many different classes as they want for a very broad dance background. Classes are scheduled in such a way as to allow students to take Ballet and Jazz and/or Hip Hop and Tap classes back-to-back for a reduced cost.
Auditions to determine eligibility for these groups will be held on Saturday, September 8. The Mini-Performance Company students (ages 4-7) will be required to take a Ballet 1 class on Wednesdays from 4:15-5:00pm and a company class on Thursdays from 3:45pm-4:45pm. Junior Performance Company students (ages 7-11) will be required to take a leveled company class from 4:00pm-5:00pm and a Production Company class from 5:00pm-6:00pm, both on Mondays, as well as a Jr. Co. Ballet class 4:00-5:15pm on Tuesdays and a Tap class at 5:00pm-6:00pm on Thursdays. The Modern/Lyrical class on Thursdays from 4:00-5:00pm on Thursdays is recommended, but not required.
Senior level Performance Company students are required to take a weekly Production Company class from 5:00pm-6:00pm back-to-back with at least one Studio or Ballet School class. Participation in 1-2 competition/workshops a year is required, with an emphasis on using the experience as a tool for honing performance skills. Students will dance in several local performances, as well as The HUB Dance Theater Productions.
